What do you think about your new kitchen doors? I liked the doors very much and thought them well made, stylish and very good value.
How did you get on fitting your new doors? The fitter was very impressed with the quality of the doors and some rather expensive handles were fitted to do them justice.
What does the finished job look like? The finish is very professional and helped to let the flat. It was snapped up in days.
What could we do to improve our kitchen doors or our service? I don’t think I can help you there. If you can always keep the product standard and be as reliable as you were for me the world could be your kitchen!

Any other comments? The doors were delivered at a time and place to suit us, which was so important as we didn’t have the space to store anything. Thank you for helping us to do a speedy efficient job.

Choosing the right worktops to complement your new kitchen doors

July 31st 2012 by .

The one thing you will notice when you buy new replacement kitchen doors is that you will start to notice the other parts of your kitchen which might need replacing too. This is likely to mean that you will be in the market for a new worktop. Thankfully it is possible to buy replacement worktops, which can be installed with little fuss and which will make a huge impact to your kitchen design.

But choosing the right worktop to match your new doors can be a difficult decision to make. The fact is that you do not want to the replacing your worktop again in a hurry. So making the right choice now is a good idea. The following tips should be enough to point you in the right direction.

Take your budget into account

A worktop can be a huge investment, especially if you decide to go for stone such as granite. It is true that stone worktops will last longer, but they require plenty of upkeep and they are more difficult to install. So keeping an eye on your budget is important.

Worktops can range from less than £100 for a 3m length to more than £250. Depending on the size of your kitchen, your worktop could stretch to thousands of pounds or you can get a great looking cheaper worktop for just a few hundred. The choice is yours, but a great compromise is to choose something which is hard-wearing and looks good too. This doesn’t have to mean stone, as many composite material work surfaces can be excellent quality.

Bear in mind that fitting a worktop is harder than replacing your kitchen doors. A competent DIYer will be able to do it themselves with the help of a worktop jig and the correct coloured adhesive. But you may be more comfortable getting a fitter in to do this for you. It may take 1-2 days for a fitter to complete this job and this could cost you around £200 – £400. Be prepared for this additional cost when deciding on your budget.

Always get samples

Ask your worktop manufacturer or seller to send you examples of their worktops. You can then compare the colours with your kitchen cupboard doors and check the quality of the worktop. Look at the colour under different lights and at different times of the day. Also make sure you wet the sample to see how this changes the way it looks. The composition of the worktop will be clear when looking at a sample. You will be able to see a cross-section which will indicate the quality of the materials. The more expensive options will usually be thicker.

What style and colour are you going for?

Knowing the colour and material to choose for your worktop can be tricky, but if you know what your overall kitchen theme is going to be it can be easier. If you are more traditional, you may prefer to have a worktop which is made of wood, in a butchers block style. These come in oak, maple, cherry, beech and a number of other woods. It may be slightly overwhelming to use these wooden worktops if you also have wooden kitchen cupboards doors. They go best with plainer painted styles or even gloss.

If you want to make a bolder statement you should choose a higher gloss worktop or perhaps one with a pattern or texture. Granite, glass, or composites with stones or sand embedded can create a more interesting look. They will work well with nearly any kitchen cupboard, but do need to be matched in terms of colour. A highly polished work surface can create a wonderful effect in a kitchen and will bounce light in all directions. However they should be matched with plainer doors. Having gloss doors and a high gloss worktop may take the shine off both.

When it comes to colour, white is more popular these days and can create a clinical look which is bright and very modern. Black is popular and will work well with any colour cupboard, except for black itself. Choose you colour based on whether you want your worktop to be highly visible or fade into the back ground. It is hard to make both your kitchen doors and your worktop the main attraction. So choose one and let the other be a compliment.
