How To Keep Your Kitchen Doors Clean

September 28th 2011 by .

So you have splashed out on new kitchen cabinet doors and your kitchen looks new and shiny. But how long will it take before dirty finger marks appear around the handles, dust gathers along the edges and greasy spots develop everywhere you look? Not too long unfortunately.

Cleaning your kitchen doors

Keeping your kitchen doors clean is an ongoing job and should be done as a regular part of cleaning your kitchen. In fact, the more often you clean the doors, the less likely they will need a deep clean, which might damage the surface. Little and often is definitely the way to go.

So what are the best ways to maintain and keep clean those new surfaces around your kitchen.? It depends entirely on the type of material your kitchen is made of. Follow these hints for a shiny clean kitchen and cupboard doors which will last a lifetime.

Wood Generally a wood cabinet door will have a coating of some sort. This may be varnish, lacquer, wax or polyurethane. These are designed to protect your doors from moisture which could cause the surface of the wood to crack or discolour. These finishes tend to mean that cleaning is made even easier and any marks will not seep into the wood.

Wood kitchen cabinet doors can be cleaned using a simple warm water and soap mixture. Dish-washing detergent is ideal. It is important that they are dried off completely to prevent water from seeping into the wood or the joins. This could cause expansion which would ruin the finish.

If your wood cabinet has spots of grease on you should avoid using any sort of abrasive or even scraping this off. They are best washed away with detergents as soon as they appear (before they have had a chance to go hard).

Painted Once again detergent is a great cleaner for this type of surface, but care must be taken not to over wet the surface or to use anything abrasive to clean with. Painted surfaces can usually be cleaned with a general kitchen surface cleaner, but do read the instructions to ensure it will not remove the colour.

Kitchen doors which are painted with a high gloss paint will require regular wiping down, but staining should be less of an issue.

Remember that painted doors can be resprayed if required. But prevention is certainly better than the cure.

High Gloss or Laminates These very fashionable doors often come in very bold colours and have an almost mirrored finish. While this looks very attractive and will bounce the light, any dirt or smears can be very obvious. For this reason they deserve a different cleaning style.

You should wash the doors with detergent and water and dry completely. You may notice that they still have some residue showing which will ruin the results of your cleaning. The best way to deal with this is to use a window cleaner or a dash of vinegar in water. Simply clean the doors in the same way as you would your windows. This will ensure the finish is smear free and super shiny.

Glass panels Kitchen doors with glass panels can be cleaned with simple glass cleaner. Due to the likely presence of grease you may wish to clean them with detergent first. Never scrub at etched glass as you may destroy the patterned surface.

Keeping your kitchen cabinets clean is a case of keeping dust and grease to a minimum. This means a regular wiping down and a monthly deep clean following the advice above.

What do you think about your new kitchen doors? The doors are wonderful
How did you get on fitting your new doors? I haven’t been able to as the holes are drilled for different hinges to mine and I am waiting for a joiner to fit with new hinges.
What does the finished job look like? Not done yet
What could we do to improve our kitchen doors or our service? Not sure but I should have taken the old hinge off the old door to see what it was like.
